Auschwitz sign stolen; found

A gang had stolen the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp sign, 'Arbeit Macht Frei [Works Sets You Free]'. On realising, Poland immediately declared a state of emergency, and has now found it.

Unfortunately, 'half-unscrewed, half-torn off from above the death camp's gate', the sign 'had been cut into three pieces'.

Five people have been arrested; but police have not revealed the (suspected or known) motive.
