Cypriot antiquities, Zintilis Collection

While unemployed, I am continuing to explore the illicit antiquities trade. Here, I see what can be learned from the Cypriot antiquities in the Thanos N. Zintilis Collection.

I find evidence that, at least in the 1950s and 1960s, the vast majority of the trade was always within the Greek Cypriot community (even during times of conflict); and, correspondingly, that the vast majority of the looting was in areas under the control of the Greek Cypriot police (not the Turkish Cypriot paramilitaries).

Introduction

It is a private Greek Cypriot collection, now in the Museum of Cycladic Art of the N. P. Goulandris Foundation in Athens, Greece. According to the Dutch archaeologist who published it, Stella Lubsen-Admiraal (2003: 1), the collection is 'one of the largest' private Cypriot antiquities collections, and one of the most important.

Thanos Zintilis collected his antiquities over 'many years' (Lubsen-Admiraal, 2003: 1). Some he found by himself, or got from local farmers or as gifts of thanks (ibid.).

However, Zintilis got 'most' of his antiquities in the 1950s and 1960s (ibid.), when the island saw intra-communal, inter-communal and anti-colonial conflict (between 1955 and 1959), and intracommunal, intercommunal and international conflict (between 1963 and 1974).

These are interesting times, because the government and the public had finally suppressed illicit excavations, then in the early 1950s, private antiquities collectors began to offer particularly high prices, so antiquities looting was reawakened (e.g. Megaw, 1952: 3; 1953: 3).

Looting was suppressed again, then re-emerged. At first it was limited to isolated areas, during the 'lawlessness' of the 1955-1959 conflict (e.g. Megaw, 1958: 4; 1959: 6); but then it was widespread, during the 1963-1974 conflict; and after the war of 1974, looting exploded in poverty-stricken, Turkish-army-occupied northern Cyprus.

The official presentation of the illicit antiquities trade during the 1963-1974 conflict is of a system of Turkish Cypriot looters and Greek Cypriot collectors (e.g. Hadjisavvas, 2001: 135).

I will see what the find-spot information for the artefacts in the Zintilis Collection can tell us about who was looting in the 1950s and 1960s. This kind of source is especially good, because it enables us to write evidence-based histories.

Note

To be very clear, I am not accusing the collectors of anything. I believe that they acted with the best of intentions. However, this information enables us to understand the consequences of those actions, and therefore equips us as archaeologists (and them as collectors) to act more effectively in the future, to protect our cultural heritage.

Preamble

Lubsen-Admiraal (2003: 9) says that 'none' of the artefacts was 'recovered during regular excavations'; yet some of them were found accidentally, so it is only possible to say that the other artefacts were probably looted.

Critically, Lubsen-Admiraal (2003: vi; 9) believes the antiquities' recorded find-spots are 'relatively reliable', 'providing accurate information on their origin'. So, we can trust them to identify the communities in which the artefacts were (probably) looted, and thereby the communities that (probably) looted them.

Information

The collection has at least 990 artefacts (because the highest numbered one in the publication is 958, and there are 32 sub-catalogued artefacts "hidden" within that number (e.g. not just #029a, but also #029b)). Lubsen-Admiraal published 839 of those 990.

(Lubsen-Admiraal (2003: 1) referred to 'nearly 1000' objects; but Athens News and Kathimerini both referred to '1,500'. Since Lubsen-Admiraal studied ancient Cypriot art, it is possible that the two Greek newspapers counted medieval and modern, and/or non-Cypriot, objects as well as ancient Cypriot ones.)

Unfortunately, only one published artefact had a complete history. (As a child in 1936, Zintilis accidentally found #537 in his home village, Klirou.)

Equally unfortunately, the dates of the finds are unrecorded (apart from #537), so we cannot know (from this collection) whether antiquities were collected during conflict or peace, or whether the communities involved changed over time.

Nevertheless, we can get a general idea of the communities involved, and thereby of the general structure of the illicit antiquities trade in Cyprus before the partition of the island.

The 'about 40%' - precisely, 344/839 (41.00%) - of artefacts with 'relatively reliable' find-spots (Lubsen-Admiraal, 2003: vi) included 33 from Paphos District, 30 from Limassol District and 1 from south-western Cyprus.

The district/regional find-spots may be relatively reliable, and may be helpful in "normal" archaeological research; but they are also distinctly unhelpful in my research (not that much better than saying "Cyprus"). There are only 280/839 (33.37%) with meaningful find-spots.

Of the 280 catalogued artefacts with meaningful find-spots, 1 was accidentally found in Klirou, but the other 279 were probably looted.

Also, 2 others must be excluded from the analysis, because they were from Lemba, which was Turkish Cypriot until 1964, then abandoned, then Greek Cypriot since 1974. Without a find-date, the community cannot be determined.

So, of the 277 probably looted artefacts with meaningful find-spots:
  • 84/277 (30.32%) were probably looted, from Greek Cypriot communities, and
  • 161/277 (58.12%) were probably looted, from Greek Cypriot majority mixed communities; while
  • 17/277 (6.14%) were probably looted, from Turkish Cypriot communities, and
  • 15/277 (5.42%) were probably looted, from Turkish Cypriot majority mixed communities.
Thus, in total:
  • 245/277 (88.45%) were probably looted, very probably by Greek Cypriots; while
  • 32/277 (11.55%) were probably looted, very probably by Turkish Cypriots.
(All catalogue information from Stella M. Lubsen-Admiraal's (2003: CD) publication of the Ancient Cypriote Art in the T. N. Zintilis Collection (see data in appendix).)

[Marc Fehlmann commented that 37.7% had 'no provenance or previous owner' (and David Gill blogged about that in a post on Cyprus and Private Collections); but an object having any history of ownership is different from it having a history of ethical ownership.]

Conclusions

The information from one of the largest private collections of Cypriot antiquities - collected over decades, during war as well as during peace - suggests that not only were Greek Cypriot looters always involved (even when official histories only acknowledge Turkish Cypriot looters).

Furthermore, this information implies that Greek Cypriot looters were disproportionately involved (around 78.9% of the population, about 88.45% of the looters).

This should not be too surprising, because a Greek Cypriot antiquities collector would normally have better connections within the Greek Cypriot community; but it does contradict official histories in at least two very important ways.

First of all, official histories blame Turkish Cypriots for looting during the conflict, and praise Greek Cypriots for "saving" antiquities. This study finds the vast majority of the trade was always within the Greek Cypriot community (both in wartime and in peacetime).

Second, official histories claim that the (Greek Cypriot) police were unable to prevent or stop the (Turkish Cypriot) looting during the conflict, because it happened in Turkish Cypriot paramilitary-controlled enclaves, beyond the Greek Cypriot administration's control. This study finds the vast majority of the looting was in the Greek Cypriot police-controlled areas.

This information demands a reinvestigation of the history of the illicit antiquities trade in Cyprus, the form and functioning of the antiquities trade, and the relationship between the Cypriot illicit antiquities trade and the Cyprus Conflict.
